FREEZE! Hold it right there ...

is language I normally associate with a B-rated thriller or when someone happens to wander into a mine field. Now, I have a different connotation. Researchers at the Center for Information Technology Policy, Princeton University, broke the encryption system on a hard drive by freezing memory chips.

Putting the freeze on a DRAM chip from an inexpensive can of compressed air caused the chip to temporarily hold data, including the encryption algorithm used to unlock scrambled data on a disk. Once the chip was frozen, researchers isolated the encryption keys from the chip's memory and used them to access the encrypted data on disk.

Granted, this exploit would require physical access to the machine. But at the rate laptops wander away from their owner, not a difficult task.

The lesson to take away from Princeton is to use another factor when encrypting data on your hard drive such as a USB hardware key or a secure identification card.

Bringing in the new drive, from the old ...

Arco, a manufacturer of drive-to-drive backup technology, announced a software solution for hard drive migration. EzMigration is designed to simplify the process of copying one drive to another, e.g., a boot drive to a new drive when you upgrade your PC.

EzMigration works under Windows (2000, 2003, XP, and Vista) and performs a bit-by-bit drive copy of an existing drive to a new drive. If the new drive is bigger than the old, EzMigration includes a partition expander tool that allows you to quickly and easily expand that 80 GB partition to the full 200 GB capacity of the bigger drive.

And if you can beat the low price of $39.99 or the time it takes EzMigration to work as opposed to your time in copying all the necessary programs and data to your new drive, let me know.

Put Delaware in your BlackBerry

Granted, it is a small state and it most likely would not fit in your BlackBerry. But if you have a client who is incorporated in the state, you can put eDelware, a digital version of the Delaware corporate law statute, on it from the Delaware law firm Potter Anderson & Corroon LLP, gratis.

eDelaware is free mobile software that supplies the full text of key Delaware statutes, with case summaries, via a BlackBerry device. This is the first free software application developed by a law firm that I have seen that allows mobile access to statutes and case summaries with updates.

If there are more out there, send them my way.

Carl Malamud's latest online "public works" project -- public.resource.org -- presents a potential challenge to paid legal research services Thomson and LexisNexis. The activist's northern California-based group will make available all Supreme Court opinions dating back to the 1700s and all U.S. appellate court decisions dating back to 1950. Malamud wants "to see all federal case law downloadable in bulk" with no restrictions on its use. For the bulk download see bulk.resource.org/courts.gov.

The importance of extranets ...

cannot be overstated. And of course, it should not be understated either, or else your competition will get the best of you. Mark Gerow showed us that extranets were an easy mechanism to marshal law firm computer resources. But they also lend themselves well to clients.

Clients can log into extranets and get access to forms and information from their legal team. Attorneys can create tasks for clients to complete and even provide a calendar of events for the client to attend. For example, a court date.

New York attorneys Willem and Margaretha Gravett have taken extranets to the divorce industry. These happily-married divorce attorneys of Gravett & Gravett recently unveiled an extranet for clients to access all the information and documentation surrounding their legal proceedings, 24 by 7. Kudos to the Gravetts.
